The short answer
- AI Mode is a separate search experience on Gemini, with follow-up questions at its core, rolled out across many regions and languages.
- It differs from AI Overviews: that is a summary above the links; AI Mode replaces the list with a conversation.
- Count on clicks to sources becoming scarce in AI Mode; impressions and citations become the measure.
- What you do now: quotable answers, a consistent brand across the web, and measuring on impressions alongside clicks.
Same question, two worlds
This is how the classic results page differs from AI Mode for the same search.
A list of ten blue links, ads above them and often an AI summary as a preview. The visitor picks a source and clicks through.
Your goal: to stand at the top of that list. One worked-out answer in conversation form, built from several sources, with source buttons beside it and an invitation to ask further. Clicking becomes the exception.
Your goal: to be named in that answer. What AI Mode is, and what it is not
You know AI Overviews already: the AI summary above the ordinary results. AI Mode goes a step further. It is a separate tab in which a custom version of Gemini answers your question, shows source buttons and invites follow-up questions.
Behaviour changes with it. Google reports itself that people ask markedly longer questions in AI Mode than in the classic search bar, and that the conversation lasts several turns. Search shifts from keywords to asking questions.
Ads are not in it in Europe yet; in the United States they are already being tested. Count on this landscape continuing to shift.
What it does to your traffic
Honest story: clicks get scarcer. That is the nature of the format: the answer is already there, so a conversation often ends inside the AI environment without anyone clicking through. Whoever counts only clicks sees their world shrink.
At the same time the value shifts. Being named in the answer is the new top position: it builds brand and steers the clicks that do still come to a select group of sources. Impressions in Search Console become a serious measure alongside clicks.
The lesson from the early months is the same as with AI Overviews, only sharper: the traffic that remains is more deliberate and further in its choice. Fewer visitors, better visitors.
The question shifts from “what position am I in” to “do I make it into the answer”.
What you can do this month
One: make your core pages quotable, with the answer up front and an own fact in it. Two: bring your brand details into line across site, business profile and mentions, because AI Mode builds its picture from all those sources together.
Three: adjust your measurement. Track impressions and brand searches alongside clicks, and periodically ask your customers’ questions to AI Mode yourself to see who gets named.
And four: stick to the fundamentals. Google stresses itself that AI Mode leans on the same ranking systems as ordinary search. There is no separate trick; there is the same quality, judged more strictly.
Frequently asked questions
Does classic search disappear with this?
No. AI Mode is an extra tab beside the ordinary results, and for quick look-ups the classic list stays shorter and handier. But the share of conversational search grows steadily.
Can I advertise in AI Mode?
In Europe not at the moment; in the United States they are testing it. Once it arrives, advertising shifts with it towards context and intent. We follow it closely.
How do I measure whether AI Mode affects me?
Look in Search Console at the ratio of impressions and clicks since the rollout, and put that next to your requests. Falling clicks at equal impressions is the pattern to watch.
