Web design

Everyone has the same AI website. Do you still stand out?

Generate three websites today with three different AI tools and put them side by side. Good chance you cannot tell them apart. The average has become free. Good news, for anyone with more to offer than average.

Reading time 7 min  ·  Web design  ·  written for 2026

The short answer

  • AI tools make neat, interchangeable sites. Recognisability is the new scarcity.
  • Distinction sits in four layers: typography, rhythm, imagery and above all voice.
  • Own design also helps your findability: built light, and with content only you can write.
  • Visitors feel the difference sooner than they can name it.

Hear the difference

Twice the same homepage intro. One comes from the machine, one from a business.

“We fully unburden you with quality total solutions for all your digital challenges. Our passion is your success.”

Could sit on any site. Says nothing, for that reason.

Why everything looks alike

The same models, the same example data, the same safe choices: the average AI site is the average of the whole web. Neat, finished, and utterly interchangeable.

The visitor has seen that pattern a hundred times by now. They recognise it unconsciously, stick a judgement on it unconsciously, and scroll on. Not because your offer is poor, but because nothing tells them a real business sits here.

That is how you lose customers to the backdrop. The painful part: the backdrop was free.

The four layers of distinctiveness

Typography first: one characteristic choice that returns everywhere does more than ten typefaces that choose nothing. Then rhythm: uneven spacing, whitespace and pace make a page human, symmetrical evenness makes it machine-made.

Layer three is imagery. One real photo of your workplace beats every glossy stock image, because it is not for sale. And layer four carries everything: the voice. A stance, concrete names and dates, sentences only you would say this way.

Look again at the two intros in the element above. The difference is not budget. The difference is daring to say who you are.

A template you can buy. A voice you have to have.

Own design is a findability choice too

Building light and semantic reads better, for visitors and for the crawlers of Google and AI assistants. Heavy templates full of scripts are not only slow; they hide your content from the systems that should cite you.

And the content itself: AI assistants cite pages that say something the rest do not. Summarised internet does not get summarised again. For the same reason, original experience beats reheated knowledge.

So the countermovement is already under way. Distinctive and light at the same time: that is the bar for anyone who wants to stand out in 2026, with people and with machines.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI template always wrong then?

As a starting point to explore it is fine. As an end station it costs you distinction. The difference sits in what you add: voice, imagery and choices.

What does own design cost over a template?

After one conversation you get a fixed quote. Put that figure honestly against what interchangeability costs you yearly in visitors who scroll on.

How do you measure recognisability?

Indirectly but clearly: returning visitors, searches on your brand name, reading time, and whether people name you by name in their request.
